In clinically normal, cachectic and diseased teleost fish, hemosiderin is observed mostly in the melano-macrophage centers of the spleen and to a much lesser extent in the center of the kidney and liver. When rainbow trout (i.e., S. gairdneri) that had been splenectomized were starved, accumulation of hemosiderin was diverted to the kidney melano-macrophages.
