12 Circulation Research June 23, 2017 neutrophils. It is therefore a stretch to expect that myeloperoxidase levels in a patient’s blood would be causally related to arrhythmias and sudden death. As such, much more work would be required to show that neutrophils in the human heart are causally involved in arrhythmias and sudden death. In summary, Mollenhauer et al10 have shown that another component of the immune system may participate in arrhythmogenesis. It seems likely that additional revelations on the roles of other resident and nonresident cells will follow. It is clear that the functions of the immune system go far beyond innate immunity. This study is one early step in that journey.
