The staining properties of mast cells in the skin differ from those in the intestinal mucosa in the rat. The intestinal cells have a lower affinity for thiazine dyes at pH 0. 5 than dermal mast cells. The staining of the intestinal mast cells at pH 0. 5 could be extinguished by either decreasing staining time or dye concentration without marked change of stainability of the dermal mast cells. Copper phthalocyanine dyes, such as Astra blue, had a stronger affinity for the intestinal mast cells than for the dermal.
