METHODSA MEDLINE search was conducted using “homosexuality” paired with specific health care terms such as “substance abuse,”“breast cancer,”“cervical cancer,” and “suicide.” Because of the paucity of research on the specific health care issues facing the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender population (except for human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] infection or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in homosexual men), the search was conducted on 1980 to current databases.
