Statistical analysis was carried out on measurements of skinfold thick-ness obtained from white male sedentary clerks (N = 854) and switchmen (N = 832) aged 40 to 59 years, employed by railroads in the Northwestern section of the United States. The distributions of the skinfold values of the subsamples were presented for 5-year age groups. No consistent age trends were discovered. Comparisons of the 2 occupational groups differing in the amount of physical activity indicates that, in general, sedentary clerks are fatter than the more active switchmen. Rounded to the nearest 0.5 mm in the combined age group 40-59 years, the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th centiles for the arm plus sub-scapular skinfold are 18.5, 26.0, 32.5, 40.5, 49.5, and 57.5 mm for the clerks and 16.5, 23.0, 31.0, 39.0, 47.0, and 52.5 mm for the switchmen. The differences in median skinfold become more marked when the 2 occupational groups are compared with each other at given levels of relative body weight.
