ResultsDuring the period of study there were 179 individuals who converted from a prior known negative tuberculin status when tested with 5 TU PPD to a positive reaction (greater than 10 rom induration) when retested with 5 TU PPD-S. Twenty-four additional known tuberculin reactors were also identified and used for comparison. Table 1 depicts percentages of subsequent reversion to negative skin test during isoniazid chemoprophylaxis. The term" reversion of tuberculin skin test sensitivity" is used to mean that on subsequent retesting no induration was demonstrated except in those individuals who had had previous sensitivity to purified protein derivative-Battey (PPD-B) or purified protein derivative-Gause (PPD-G). In the latter group, skin sensitivity to PPDS from 0 to 8 mm induration was considered negative if the reaction to PPD-G was in excess of 10 mm. The majority of such negative reactions, however, included individuals whose reaction was 0 mm or was 0 to 4 mm to PPD-S when reactivity to PPD-G was demonstrated. The actual date of infection is unknown. For the groups in Table 1, conversion occurred within the period of time listed, since that is the interval between known nonreactivity and known reactivity to 5 TU PPD-S. There were 45 who had converted
