R Gorves at CUST, Blaise Pascal University, Clermont-Ferrand, France, has since 1991 designed and been developing the Panda, a light-weight (20kg) hand-held dynamic cone penetrometer for testing soils and materials. This article describes the Panda and its applications. The Panda uses variable energy from a hammer blow, and can be operated by one person to test soils to 6m deep in almost any location. An accelerometer at the head of the tool measures the hammer's speed of impact, and a retractable tape measures the penetration depth. The dynamic cone resistance and current depth are then calculated from a formula, and displayed in real time on a computer screen. The Panda's many applications can be classified into: (1) monitoring the compaction of materials used in fill, in trenching works, structures, cut and cover, and ground improvement; and (2) all types of site investigation. A simple method, available in the Panda software, interprets the results from a Panda test when monitoring fill. The article presents the results of some tests using this method, together with results at several test bed sites, representing various soil types in different parts of the UK and developed by the Building Research Establishment (BRE). The Panda can also be used for ground improvement as a purely comparative tool.
