The aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of throughput, which is a performance index for pointing devices specified by ISO9241-411, as a usability index of pointing tasks in eye-gaze input systems. This study investigated the correlation between throughput and the subjective rating score. The pointing task in this experiment is moving a cursor and clicking a predetermined target on an experimental screen. The target shape, the target size, the movement distance, and the direction of the target presentation were set as within-subject experimental variables. The pointing time, the coordinate of the cursor, and the subjective rating on ease of the pointing task were measured, and the effective index of difficulty and the throughput were calculated. The effective index of difficulty is the measure of precision required in a task specified by ISO9241-411. As a result, the throughput calculated using the two-dimensional effective target width showed high correlation with the subjective rating score. To further enhance the correlation, the formula to calculate the effective target distance was improved based on its relationship with the aspect ratio of the target shape. The throughput obtained using the improved effective target distance enhanced the correlation.
