Growth in medium containing 500 mM galactose is known to promote the adhesion ofCandida albicansto buccal epithelial cells or to acrylic in vitro. Of 5 otherCandidaspecies tested, onlyC. tropicalis(one strain) showed substantially increased adhesion to buccal cells (but not to acrylic) after growth under these conditions. A second strain ofC. tropicalisas well asC. stellatoidea, C. parapsilosis, C. pseudotropicalis, C. guilliermondiiandSaccharomyces cerevisiaeshowed little or no increased adhesion to either surface. However, after growth in medium containing 50 mM glucose,C. tropicalisandC. parapsilosiswere significantly more adherent to acrylic than glucose-grown yeasts of the other species, includingC. albicans. These results are discussed in relation to the colonization and infection potential of the pathogenicCandidaspecies.
