RESULTS The results are summarized in Table I. The extracellular space was enlarged in all gliomas studied (fig. 1, Plate LIT), but some of them showed great variations, including areas of almost normal intercellular clefts, measuring 8 per cent of volume as well as areas of greatly distended extracellular compartments (60-70 per cent). The average in most of these tumours was between 20 and 40 per cent. There was no appreciable difference in this report between glioblastomas and astrocytomas. The two endotheliomatous meningiomas showed modest enlargement of their extracellular space. This enlargement was caused by the presence of triangular or rhomboid-shaped wedges at the junction of several cells rather than by the distension of the cleft separating two adjacent cell bodies (fig. 2).
