Total alkaline phosphatase activity is inversely related to cellular P in the particulate organic matter of waters above and below the thermocline in 9 Minnesota lakes. Diagnostic criteria for assessing surplus and limiting levels of P are proposed. When applied to seasonal changes in P status in Lake Josephine, severe P starvation in late summer and autumn is demonstrated.
