Fig. 1. Fractured somatotopy in lobulus simplex (folium B). Tactile projections to left lobulus simplex (LS-B) are illustrated by both figurine (A) and patchy-mosaic (B) methods. A: data in figurine map is collated from 6 experiments. The blackened portions on each figurine show the locations of peripheral receptive fields (RF's) which, when stimulated, activate responses in the granule cell (GC) layer. The position of each figurine on LS indicates the site of a recording electrode puncture. The relative location of this tactile area on LS-B is indicated by the dotted region on brain diagram in D. Projections to LS-B originate only in regions within and around the face and mouth (gingiva, incisors, lips and vibrissae). B: each outlined patch here circumscribes those figurines in A having a common RF. This schematic drawing illustrates the patch-like array of RF projections from specific perioral and face parts. For example, the large upper tip (ul) patch located in the central region of the folium in B is congruent in shape and size with the same area occupied by the 12 upper lip figurines within the dashedline region of A. The RF projection to adjacent patches are different, demonstrating a disjunctive or'fractured'pattern of organization. However, the pattern of organization within the patches is somatotopic as seen at least in the upper lip patch surrounded by dashed lines in A. Abbreviations: g, gingiva; li, lower incisor; 11, lower lip; ui, upper incisor; ul, upper lip; V, vibrissae. C: diagram of perioral and intraoral regions showing major cutaneous structures that project to LS-B. Abbreviations: same as in BD Drawing of cerebellum indicating location of the LS tactile area (black dots) in folium B of lobulus simplex. Millimeter scale between A and B indicates magnification of folial diagrams. Centimeter scale under D indicates enlargement factor for brain diagram.
