The mechanisms by which neurotransmitters elicit short-term sig-Ming events involved in neurotransmission have been the focus of decades of research. This has been paralleled in more recent years by an interest in the longterm actions of neurotransmitters in such processes as learning memory, development, and other forms of plasticity. Emerging evidence suggests that regulation of gene expression is an important mechanism through which neurotnnsmittem exert long-term effects in the nervous system. Mapping the sequence of events that link the cell surface to the nucleus (Fig. 1) may make it possible to identify the key step (s) that conveys specificity to the action of a neurotransmitter. This review focuses on four levels that contribute to the specific and characteristic effect elicited by a neurotransmitter in a given neuron: the nature of the neurotransmitter receptor and the combinations of second messengers generated, the DNA-binding factors induced and/or activated in that cell population, the regulatory elements in the gene whose transcription
