Exit-site infections (ESls) and chronic ESls in particular are complications of peritoneal dialysis (PD) therapy that can lead to tunnel infection (TI), peritonitis, and removal of the PD catheter. In a study by Piraino et al. (1) ESls and TIs occurred in 65% of the 52 PD catheters that required removal. To reduce ESI rate modifications of the continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) procedure (e.g., nondisconnect systems) (2), different CAPD catheter configurations and materials were investigated (see, e.g., References 3-5). Luzaret al. showed that improved care of the exit site reduces the ESI rate (6). However, effective and long-Iasting prevention of ESls has not yet been obtained. The antimicrobial effect of silver has been noted for many years (7) and is still used for prophylaxis (8-10) and therapy (11) of infections. The aim of this study was to determine whether ESls in CAPD could be reduced by the prophylactic application of silver .
