The technique of making observations on the detailed structure of salivary chromosomes is discussed. An interesting set of maps is presented and a number of "landmarks" are pointed out. The total length of the salivary chromosomes is ca. 150 times that of the gonial chromosomes. Stretched chromosomes are better for observation than unstretched. The approximate location of genes is discussed and an estimate of 2,650 bands or loci is given. Duplications or repeats in chromosomes, both direct and reversed, are considered to have an important bearing on the evolution of species.
