This paper is intended to bridge Dr. Trommsdorff’s review of cultural differences in socialization (e.g., Rothbaum & Trommsdorff, 2007) with recent theorizing about primary and secondary control (Rothbaum & Wang, in press). Dr. Trommsdorff has a longstanding interest in control as it pertains to culture and socialization (e.g., Trommsdorff, 1995). Primary control is defined as changing the world to fit the self, as seen for example when the child loses interest in one toy and selects a new toy to play with, or when the child modifies that toy in desired ways. Secondary control is defined as changing the self to fit the world, as seen for example in focusing on accepting the toys one already has, in focusing on desirable aspects of those toys, and playing with the toys in ways and at times dedicated for length of time dictated by caregivers and prevailing norms. We are invested in building on Dr. Trommsdorff’s rich descriptions of how socio-cultural contexts influence the development of children’s primary and secondary control (e.g., Trommsdorff & Friedlmeier, 1993).
