Stable Pd III: Dinuclear Pd III complexes of the tridentate ligand trimethyltriazacyclononane (Me 3 tacn) were obtained by one-electron oxidation of mononuclear Pd II precursors. Further oxidation led reversibly to mononuclear Pd IV species. The Pd II and Pd III complexes are shown to be involved in the catalytic Kharasch addition of polyhaloalkanes to alkenes.
