The spleen, because of its potential effect upon the formed elements of the blood, is an organ of particular interest in the field of transplantation. Experiments in small animals have been limited primarily to studies of the effects of intravenous injection, and only in larger animals, particularly the dog, have studies of total-spleen transplants been accomplished. There is some evidence to indicate that the two methods of transplantation are not comparable. During the past five years we have studied autologous and homologous spleen transplants in the dog, using unmodified recipients and recipients that were first exposed to varying doses of total-body irradiation.
