To study the dynamic structure of lipid bilayers, the 13C nuclear spin-lattice (7)) relaxation times of sonicated aqueous dispersions of egg yolk phosphatidylcholine (EYL) were measured. It was found that the 7\values increase away from the glycerol backbone both toward the trimethylammonium group of the choline moiety and toward the terminal methyl group of the fatty acyl chains, thus indicating the pres-ence of two mobility gradients. Information concerning the positioning of thestearic acid derivative spin labels has been obtained from 7j measurements of phosphatidylcholine vesicles labeled with these probes. The results suggest that the
