More than 50 spp. of closely related glyptothripine Thysanoptera have been described from leaf litter at 1 site in southern Brazil. The ecological and evolutionary significance of this species swarm are discussed, and the relationships of the New World glyptothripine genera are reassessed. A key is produced to the world genera of the Glyptothripini, and a check list is provided to the 15 genera [Aesthetothrips Hood, Chamaeothrips Hood, Chorithrips Hood, Chortothrips Hood, Chthonothrips Hood, Eschatothrips Stannard, Eurythrips Hinds (= Plemmelothrips Hood, syn. nov.), Glyptothrips Hood (= Erkosothrips Stannard, syn. nov.), Mystrothips Priesner, Orthothrips Priesner (= Apoxythrips Hood), Pedoeothrips Hood, Pleurothrips Hood, Schazothrips Hood, Terthrothrips Karny and Tylothrips Hood (= Phragmothrips Hood, syn. nov., = Copiothrips Hood, syn. nov.)] and 119 spp. from the New World. Nomenclatural changes include 35 new combinations, 5 new generic synonyms and 1 new specific synonym.
