Enterprise Systems (ES), also called as Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), has become increasingly popular over the last two decades because it integrates and extends business processes across the boundaries of business functions and corporate walls. With global supply chain and fierce competition in place, there is a need for suitable ES to integrate enterprises in a supply chain environment with the objective for achieving efficiency, competency and competitiveness. There is no doubt that ES is having an important long-term strategic impact on global business. Due to the importance of this subject, there is a growing demand for research on ES to provide insights on issues, challenges and solutions related to the design, implementation and management of ES. To respond to the market needs from both academic researchers and practitioners for communicating research results, a conference series called International Conference on Enterprise Systems (ICES) has been held since 2013. ICES is co-sponsored by the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society Technical Committee on Enterprise Information Systems, IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society Technical Committee on Enterprise Architecture and Engineering and IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society South Africa Chapter. The first ICES, ICES 2013, was successfully held in Cape Town, South Africa. The second ICES, ICES 2014, was held in Shanghai, China. This special issue of Enterprise Information Systems presents expanded versions of nine papers from the ICES 2014 held in Shanghai, China. This special issue is to report on the recent research and practice in ES. To prepare for this issue, all authors were invited to respond to two rounds of peer review. Each paper emphasises the importance of ES in a different way. Currently, many enterprises are considering implementing supply and demand network (SDN) strategies for a sustainable competitive advantage (Hu et al. 2015). A multifunctional SDN is a complex nonlinear system that emphasises cooperation and collaboration among enterprises. In the paper by Hu, Hou, Tian and Li, a novel model based on game theory and Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution is proposed. In the paper entitled ‘The design of an m-Health monitoring system based on a cloud computing platform’, for mobile health (m-Health) (Yan et al. 2015), a framework of a m-Health monitoring system based on the cloud computing platform (Cloud-MHMS) is proposed for implementing pervasive health monitoring. In recent decades, the study on business process in enterprise modelling has been popular (Tan et al. 2008; Zhang, Zhao, and Xu 2015). In the paper entitled ‘Enterprise pattern: integrating the business process into a unified enterprise model of modern service company’, the authors provided a unified enterprise modelling approach named Enterprise Pattern (EP) to bridge the gap between the business process model and the enterprise model. The authors proposed a language named Enterprise Pattern Description Language (EPDL) covering basic language elements of EP, and formulated the language syntax and basic extraction rules. Furthermore, they extended Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) to support EPDL, named BPMN for Enterprise Pattern (BPMN4EP). In recent decades, with the rapid economic globalisation, the research and practice on supply chain management (SCM) has been developing rapidly (Li 2012). SCM competence has attracted increasing attention from both practitioners and scholars in recent years (Li et al. 2016). Shou and Wang, in their paper entitled ‘Multidimensional competences of supply chain managers: an empirical study’, conducted an explorative study on the dimensionality of SCM competence. The authors adopted the multidimensional scaling (MDS) technique to analyse data. Five dimensions of SCM competence were identified: generic skills, functional skills, SCM ENTERPRISE INFORMATION SYSTEMS, 2017 VOL. 11, NO. 1, 1–3 http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/17517575.2016.1201597
