More applications are received than there are posts to fill. It is therefore necessary for members of the regional board’s medical staff to do a preliminary selection of the applicants. For this purpose all Newcastle students and graduates, and all students and graduates of other medical schools in the United Kingdom, are included in the match. Of the remain-der, those applicants who live in the region or have previous contacts or associations with it, are given preference. A larger number of candidates are retained than there are posts available, to allow for drop-outs.
