This fascinating collection of essays by a range of Italian and American scholars grew out of a conference held at Harvard University in the spring of 2006. In some ways, it is not a standalone work. The conference was a companion to a meeting held in Rome the previous year and, as the editor Mauro Calcagno makes clear in the introduction, both gatherings (and their resultant books) represent a conscious attempt at ‘cultural translation’ça furthering and deepening of the dialogue between Italian and American researchers in the field of Italian Renaissance studies. The book is also part of an initiative working towards a website (www. marenzio. org), as well as the new Marenzio Online Digital Edition (MODE), the innovative scope of which would surely impress those scholars who have been advocating a new Marenzio edition since at least the late 1980s.
