Characterisations of ‘old’ and ‘new’ economies often seem to suggest that they are separate areas of economic activity which have grown and developed on different technological bases and according to different organisational principles. There has been a tendency for some observers to make assumptions that suggest that manufacturing is in decline in ‘new’ economies and that the essential productive activity in these economies is found in the service sectors. A recent Australian study suggests that we should look at trends in more detail as the two economies are often linked via the competitive strategies (product-service packaging) of individual firms.
