and/or author had added an extra 50 pages or so to what is a rather short book and included a few more details of exactly how one creates a game such as Creatures, with explicit indications of where the various notions such as self-organization and adaptation come into play in the Creatures world. But this is a minor quibble. If you’ve heard about ALife but aren’t quite sure what it is or where it’s going, Grand’s book is an excellent place to enter one of the more exciting areas of twentyfirst-century science. ■ John L.
