In 1964 Sellin and Wolfgang published The Measurement of Delinquency in which they obtained a set of scores for measuring the seriousness of criminal offences. The subjects used to obtain the scores included students, judges and policemen; two methods of scoring were used, the ratio scale and the category scale (see e.g. Stevens, 1957). Their study has been criticised on methodological grounds (see e.g. Pease et al., 1974). The purpose of the present study was to examine two aspects of the problem. First, three methods of assessing the relative seriousness of a set of offences were used by the same subjects, to see if they were consistent; these were: paired compari sons, the category scale and the ratio scale. Secondly, the sample of subjects was taken from the general population, so that comparisons between social classes could be made. A group of students was also included. Many of the earlier studies confined themselves to students; so far only Rossi et al. (1974) and Sparks et al. (1977) have sampled the general population. Method Seven areas of Sheffield were chosen which were known to include people from all social classes. A random sample of 650 individuals was taken from these areas. A group of 40 volunteer first-year sociology students was also given the questionnaire. The following eleven offences were used :—
