Using Coles additive law of the wall and law of the wake, with constant shift allowed for the effect of roughness, an integral method of analysis is put forward for evaluating the characteristic parameters (friction, wake and roughness parameters) from experimental mean velocity data of rough-wall turbulent boundary layers in zero pressure gradient. Emphasis is laid on the consistent determination of characteristic parameters and the interpretation of the effects of roughness in the context of these parameters. Re-evaluation of the published experimental data is made for three examples of the k-type roughness (the sand grain, sphere and circular rod roughnesses) and, furthermore, for the groove roughness of the d-type. A special interest attaches to the last example as it exhibits equilibrium behavior.
