For the first time, an ambient pressure organic superconductor has been found to have a transition temperature above that both of liquid helium (4.2 K) and the first superconductor, Hg metal. This is the first case of metal atom replacement of the central atom of the I3 anion, and it promises to afford a new means for the synthesis of new ambient pressure organic superconductors with even higher transition temperatures. As discussed in this Account, organic superconductivity has now been realized in a number of Se- and S-based materials. 76 references, 6 figures.
