The preparation, structure, and magnetic properties of a trinuclear complex, {[(Tp*)FeIII(CN)3]2[MnII(phen)2]} (1), are described. The trinuclear complex is obtained via treatment of dimethylformamide/diethyl ether mixtures of [NEt4][(Tp*)FeIII(CN)3]∙H2O [Tp* = tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate], manganese(II) trifluoromethanesulfonate, and two equivalents of 1,10-phenanthroline. Analysis of the magnetic data suggests that1contains a 2:1 ratio of low spin FeIIILS(S= ½) and high spin MnIIHS(S=5/2) ions that undergo cyanide-mediated antiferromagnetic exchange within the FeIIILS(μ-CN)MnIIHSunits. Overall, anS=3/2magnetic ground state is found for the complex, withJiso= -6.9(1) cm−1andgiso= 2.11(1).
