S ago after research showed the presence of bacteria in droplet nuclei from the nose and mouth.’The first study on the effectiveness of surgical masks on patient infection reduction was reported in 1926.2 This study was prompted by an unusual number of postoperative surgical ‘wound infections (SWIs) that occurred in clean wounds after surgical procedures. The study revealed that one third of the surgical staff members harbored hemolytic streptococci in their throats. In addition, surgeons and nurses had not been covering their noses with their two-ply gauze masks during surgical procedures. A follow-up study indicated that proper masking by surgical staff members with the hemolytic streptococcus entering the OR reduced infections to aminim~ m.~ Despite the attention surgical masks received during this early period, many surgical staff members were not using them often or correctly.
