This chapter summarizes research on genetic engineering in plants for nematode resistance. Nematode-targeted (i.e. aimed at killing the nematode or impairing its function to prevent reproduction) and feeding site-disruptive (i.e. aimed at disrupting the feeding sites that nematodes initiate within the plants) resistances are largely covered, whereas the transfer of cloned resistance genes is only briefly discussed. Multiple component strategies and cell death systems for conferring nematode resistance, and the roles of promoters and reporter genes in feeding site-targeted systems are described. Guidelines to planning a proposed programme of research to engineer resistance to nematodes are provided.
