Dieldrin initially increased the rate of all ion exchange processes in the nervous tissues of both American and German cockroaches. After this initial excitation period, Na ions accumulated in the dieldrin-treated nerve cells while the K ion influx decreased. The situation superficially resembles that of DDT poisoning. Dieldrin also caused a mild condition of hypocalcemia at the late stage of poisoning. This phenomenon, however, does not seem to be causally related to the mode of dieldrin resistance in the German cockroach strains.
