Over the past three decades, an increasingly large network of evangelical pastors, authors, and children have donned spiritual armor and sought to deliver the world of its demons through a series of practices aptly titled “spiritual warfare.” This movement, known as the “Third Wave,” is often dismissed as a fringe of American Christianity or entertained as a novelty by outsiders. However, American Possessions: Fighting Demons in the Contemporary UnitedStates holds that spiritual warfare is a contact zone for some of the most salient themes in late-modern American religious–and secular–culture. Extending his previous work on religion and class in America, Sean McCloud argues that the concerns of demon fighters are hopelessly intertwined with “the contemporary discourses of consumer capitalism, popular culture, politics, and neoliberalism”(3). Thus, American Possessions is not merely a detailed account of a war waging between a group of Christians and the forces of Satan, but an examination of how this cosmological conflict can be used as an entry point to understand something, paradoxically, much larger.
