A modification of the Lowry procedure is described for the rapid and reliable analysis of proteolipid protein. The procedure involves the addition of sodium dodecyl sulfate to dissolve the lipid-containing protein samples or to maintain the water-soluble apoprotein in solution. All steps in the analysis are carried out at room temperature. Chymotrypsin and Versatol are more suitable standards for proteolipid protein than is bovine serum albumin. The method has been applied to the analysis of myelin proteins.
