Ocular changes in children with cystic fibrosis of the pancreas were first described by Bruce and co-workers. 1 Ophthalmologic abnormalities were observed in 24 patients with moderate to severe pulmonary disease. The predominant fundus changes were en gorgement of the retinal veins and papil ledema. Three children had bilateral central scotomas which disappeared in two of them when their general condition im proved. The eyes of three other patients were examined histologically and supported the ophthalmoscopic findings. All patients presumably had been treated extensively with antibiotics. The role which such treat ment may have played in producing the eye changes was not investigated at that time. In recent reports, however, Denning2 and Huang3 drew attention to the possible con nection between the optic-nerve involvement and prolonged chemotherapy with chloram phenicol.
