We conducted a series of investigations from 1975 to 1978 to determine the ore prospects of the volcanogenic-sedimentary associations of the Central and South Urals. We studied the characteristics of the structures of the ore fields and deposits of skarn-magnetite type of iron; associational, facies, and lithologic analyses of the ore-surrounding sequences; and petrochemical and geochemical studies of the rocks and ores. These studies enabled us to identify a number of features indicating a genetic association between the well-known skarn-magnetite deposits of the Urals and the processes of volcanogenic sedimentation and their subsequent metamorphism.Below, we shall critically discuss the principal factors in the localization of the skarn-magnetite deposits of the Urals, advanced as proofs of the contact-metasomatic origin of the ores. We will then follow with an attempt to justify a volcanogenic-sedimentary origin for these deposits.
