The authors, all Mayan linguists or epigraphers, synthesize a wealth of linguistic, epigraphic, and archaeological evidence bearing on contact that affected Classic Maya culture. The Classic Maya can be identified with the Lowland Mayan language area, consisting of the relatively distantly related Cholan and Yucatecan branches of Mayan languages. These languages share diffused features not accountable for by common ancestry and not shared with other Mayan groups. They also show foreign diffusion from Zapotecan, Mixe-Zoquean, Nahua, Totonacan, and a few other languages. Foreign affinities of Mayan hieroglyphic writing are analyzed. Arguing for and assuming an Olmec origin for mesoamerican writing, the authors identify the first Mayan hieroglyphs as Cholan, followed by Yucatecan. There is no evidence for hieroglyphic writing in any other Mayan language. Mayan script shares features with other southeastern mesoamerican scripts, especially the Greater Izapan group. The evidence for foreign impact on Lowland Mayan languages and writing is assessed in order to refine the chronology of the area and to draw conclusions regarding social interaction and culture history. This work is an invaluable aid to understanding Mayan prehistory. The authors make sense of complex interrelated data from different sources.
