Insulin self-associ-ates in aqueous solution. By sedimentations equilibrium experiments the monomer molecular weight is found to be 5800 awu. At pH 2, ionic strength o. 1, monomers, dimers, tetramer, and hexamers are found to exist in dynamic equilibrium. Measurements at 15 and 25[degree] yield k.[DELTA]Go, [DELTA] Ho, and [DELTA]So values for the association reactions. Statistical mechanical calculations suggest that the hypothesis of limited rotational freedom of the monomers accompanied by hydrophobic bonding accounts most satisfactorily for the observed entropies of association.
