Acute myocardial infarction carries a high mortality, which most Scandinavian authors agree to be approximately 30 per cent. This considerable figure has not lessened during the past 30 years, which has been borne out by an analysis of more than 3000 in farction cases in Malino during the years 1935-1960 (Sievers, 1964). In addition the frequency of the condition is increasing, particu larly in countries with high living standards. It is thus natural that several therapeutic measures have been proposed and tried. Among those attempted in our clinic the effect of steroid therapy is worthy of mention (Sievers et al., 1964|. A treatment proposed by several authors during recent years is the intravenous infusion of glucose, insulin and potassium (GIK-treatment). A similar idea was proposed as early as 1930 by Be//et al.(1930), who suggested treatment with intravenous dextrose. In 1956 treatment with glucose, insulin and potassium was dis cussed by Laboril (1956, 1963) and also other workers in France have reported their experiences (Guiran et al., 1964). Ponce de León el al. in Mexico City (1962) used GIK-treatment both in dogs and patients with myocardial infarction. The results of such medi cation have also been reported by Josipovic (1964), Fritz (1965) and Orinius (1965).An increased intracellular content of potassium ions is achieved by administering glucose and insulin (Surawics et al., 1963). Since the ischaemic zone in the periphery of an acute infarct is charac terized electrophysiologicaDy by a decreased ability of repolari zation, the proposed treatment is meant to enhance the transpor
