Some readers may be surprised that this issue of a decidedly clinical journal contains a paper examining volatile anaesthetic effects on hypoxic chemoreflex response in rats [1]. What is the role of such animal experimentation in understanding a clinical science? What is a ‘clinical study’? How much should practising clinicians know about advances in laboratory research using animal tissue (and how much should they instead ‘take as read’, leaving the detail to ‘proper scientists’)?
