METHODSDogs were anesthetized with morphine sulfate, 15 mg subcutaneously, followed 0.5 hr later with sufficient saturated choralose solution to produce a surgical level of anesthesia. A useful method of infusing intravenously the large volume of choralose solution required(100-200 ml) was developed. A 17-gauge needle was introduced into a large forelimb vein, and PE-50 polyethylene tubing attached to a reservoir containing the choralose solution was passed well up the vein through the needle which was then withdrawn. A short segment of rubber tubing interposed between the reservoir and the polyethylene tubing was passed through a Vibrostaltic pump (Chemical Rubber Company, Cleveland, Ohio), which propelled the choralose solution into the vein at a predetermined rate (usually about 10 ml/min). Movements of the dog did not interrupt the infusion, provided the long tubing was kept clear of entanglement.
