In Scandinavia, as elsewhere, the growing interest in class and mobility among sociologists has manifested itself in a number of empirical studies carried out in the 1940’s and 1950’s. As a result we know more than before about mobility and life chances in different social classes. However, these studies have been limited in their approach; neither the money, nor the manpower at disposal has permitted anything else. The time now seems ripe to try to remove some of these limitations by an inter-Scandinavian study on a larger scale. In particular it should aim at a closer co-ordination of methods and definitions than has so far been attained.
