The Gram-positive sporulating bacterium,Bacillus subtilis, has a complex transcriptional apparatus consisting of at least three different holoenzymes during its vegetative growth and at least one new holoenzyme during sporulation. The multiple forms of holoenzyme contain sigma factors whose molecular weights range from 28,000 to 55,000. Base sequence analyses have revealed that the promoters recognized by these holoenzymes differ in their −35 and −10 regions. Thus regulation of gene expression in this organism depends at least in part on transcriptional specificity between a family of holoenzymes and sets of promoter spectra.
