MethodThe changes in intra-arterial blood-pressure were recorded following rapid tilting of the subjects to a 60 degree head-up position on a tilt table. In this position the subjects' feet were supported by a foot-plate. Intra-arterial pressure measurements were made using a thin-walled 21-gauge needle inserted into the bracbial artery in the antecubital fossa. The needle was connected by nylon tubing (internal diameter 0-8 mm) to a Devices pressure transducer and amplifier, the system giving an approximate over-all frequency response of 40 cpsThe patients were also required to perform a Valsalva manoeuvre by blowing into a pressure gauge with a blow-pressure of 40 mmHg maintained for 12 to 15 seconds, in order to determine how rapidly effective reflex vasomotor activity occurred as a response to an acute reduction of pulse pressure (Sharpey-Schafer, 1953).
