In a series of previous studies,'-6 we clarified some aspects of the presence and distribution in mammalian teeth, the structure, and the histochemical nature of the peritubular matrix. Observations were mainly limited to the crown dentin, and horse teeth were selected as main source of material for observation in the optical level,2' 5, 6 because the peritubular matrix appears more strikingly in crown dentin than in root dentin and because it is larger in horse teeth than in human teeth, which were used for electron microscopy.' 3, 4These studies, therefore, have lacked systematic arrangement of materials, and we have left many aspects of the developmental phase of the peritubular matrix to future research. The present report is primarily concerned with the peritubular matrix in human crown and root dentin in formative and mature stages. In mature root dentin, the sclerosed transparent dentin was studied as a preliminary observation on age changes that might occur in the peritubular matrix.
