The effects of inorganic salts and urea on the mode of packing of nonionic surfactant, homogeneous hepta-ethylene glycol dodecyl ether (C12E7), monomers in the micelle were investigated by the charge-transfer (CT) interaction between C12E7micelle and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) in the solubilized system. The changes in the intensity of the CT interaction in the presence of additives were attributed to compacted or loosened micelles. The compactness of C12E7micelles increased with the addition of LiCl, NaCl, KCl, KBr, and K2SO4, and decreased with the addition of KNO3, KSCN, and urea. Furthermore, the effects of additives on the cloud point of C12E7were found to correspond fairly well to their effects on the CT interaction. The results suggest that the factors affecting the cloud point are related to the changes in the packing of C12E7monomers in the micelle.
