As higher education institutions set up and run makerspaces, important choices and challenges arise in deciding how to approach the planning and design of both the spaces and the services to be offered [1,2]. This paper looks at the experience of growing maker-centric spaces and support in the context of transforming some traditional teaching and learning settings (e.g., library study areas, classrooms, and computer labs). The all-important planning phase for this transformation included a year-long service design initiative structured by user-centered design principles. The resulting services, layouts of the spaces, and choice of technology and training offered are informed both by consideration of a new design oriented curriculum at the university and a general interest in creative do-it- yourself (DIY) creativity. The goals of this paper include: 1) explaining the service design process and key decisions made around what activities to support in the new settings; 2) describing issues and challenges for developing sustainable service models in these settings; and 3) talking about lessons learned in developing the staff expertise and capacity to manage and operate these new spaces and services.
