Mean values for fibre composition of the middle gluteal muscle of 15 stallions and 10 mares of the Andalusian breed were 2.95±6.7% for type I, 38.7±6.8% for type IIA and 31.8±4.3% for type IIB. Mean fibre areas (µm2) were 3258±863 for type I, 4172± 1074 for type IIA, and 5572±(1394) for type IIB. Mean diameters (µm) were (53.0±6.5) for type I, and 59.9±7.2 for type IIA, and 68.8±10.6 for type IIB.
