discussion of the study is the unresolved basic issue that the diagnostic criteria for ADHD are so vague and subjective that one cannot tell precisely who is being included in any study population.11,12 Were the subjects of the MTA study limited to that small group who are disabled by pervasive inattention or hyperactivity or did it involve many who were simply annoying their parents or teachers for a variety of other reasons? We expect that these prominent researchers made a careful selection of their subjects but they revealed no concern about the hazy diagnostic criteria now in general use.
