Population regulation of 5 species of warbler (Dendroica tigrina, D. coronata, D. virens, D. fusca, D. castanea) was studied in coniferous forests in Maine and on wintering grounds in Costa Rica. D. tigrina and D. castanea are partly dependent upon periods of superabundant food, while remaining species maintain populations which are roughly proportional to volume of foliage in their preferred feeding zones. Differences in feeding position, behavior, and nesting date, combined with slight differences in habitat preference and perhaps a tendency for territoriality to have a stronger regulating effect upon the same species than on others, permit coexistence of species.
